Wasn’t too happy about the Swedish P1800 club badge so I did not fit it. Maybe later. In the meanwhile I found a chromed RAC-badge. RAC was the major British rally since the 30’s, usually won by various British cars like Jaguars, Triumphs and once Aston Martin (1956). But starting in the 60’s other marks started to win. Saab 96 won 4 times during the 60’s, Mini Cooper, Lotus Cortina and Lancias once each. But more importantly for this blog, a Volvo PV544 won it in 1963 and 1964 fitted with the same engine as the P1800S ’64. So to me a perfect fit for the grille. And I like the logo.
Driver was Tom Trana, he won a series of Rallies in his days. The PV544 was successful in Monte Carlo, Swedish Rally and various other races. Here’s a shot from what was during the time was considered one of the toughest races, East African Safari Rally. Car was driven by the famous Singh brothers.
But Volvo had other drivers too. Ewy Blomqvist was an early female that won various titles. She did not win the RAC, Tom Trana did with his 544. She competed in other cars too including the 544 and later she went Mercedes. But in the shot below she’s competing in the RAC with a P1800 61-64. It’s an interesting story that’s worthwhile googling.
Anyway, back to grille badges. I think this is appropriate on a -64.
